Exhaust replacement: price, rust and leaks

The exhaust isn't a part that fails overnight — it slowly deteriorates through season after season of road salt. You notice it only when a seam starts leaking, a silencer rattles, or the engine management starts getting bad readings via the lambda sensor. This page explains how to identify a worn section, which part you actually need to replace, and what it costs.

What does the exhaust do?

The exhaust carries hot combustion gases away from the engine, dampens noise, and — together with the catalytic converter and particulate filter — keeps emissions within legal limits. The line typically consists of three or four sections: manifold, front silencer, centre silencer, and tail silencer. Each can be replaced separately, but most wear shows up in the centre silencer and the seams around it. Rust eats mostly from the inside: condensation that lingers after short trips mixes with sulphate into a mild acid.

Signs of a worn exhaust

  • Audible leak under the car — a deep buzz at idle or a barking note on acceleration.
  • Visible rust patches, holes, or a separated seam (torch + mirror).
  • Vibrations or rattling at specific revs (worn exhaust hangers).
  • Engine warning light with P0420 / P0430 or a lambda-related fault (a leak before the sensor causes wrong readings).
  • Smell of exhaust gases inside the cabin, particularly at idle.
  • MOT (APK): visible leak or rusted-through section = automatic fail.

When to replace

There's no fixed interval — exhausts are replaced reactively. A factory system typically lasts 8 to 12 years under Dutch conditions; aftermarket stainless steel lasts considerably longer. Replace by section: a leaking centre silencer doesn't require a whole new line. At MOT, inspectors check tightness and mounting — a rusted-through section or a loose hanger is an immediate fail.

What does an exhaust section cost?

An end or centre silencer runs around € 40 – € 150 for aftermarket, € 100 – € 300 for OEM or stainless steel. A complete exhaust set from the catalyst flange is € 150 – € 600 depending on the model. Workshop labour: 0.5 to 2 hours per section, longer if bolts are seized. Used sections from a Dutch scrapyard: € 15 – € 100 — inspect seams and flange faces before you buy.

DIY?

Difficulty: Medium

Mechanically simple: clamps off, section off, new one on, refit. The real work is in the seized bolts: after ten Dutch winters they rarely come loose voluntarily. Always work with the car on axle stands, never on a jack alone. If you're unsure whether a weld point will hold — leave it to a workshop. An exhaust isn't safety-critical like the brakes, but a section dropping off mid-drive is still dangerous.

  • Jack and axle stands (or a lift)
  • Ring + socket set, typically 13/15/17 mm
  • Penetrating oil or a gas torch for seized bolts
  • New gaskets, clamps and possibly hangers
  • Safety glasses and gloves (rust flakes fall down)

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to replace the whole exhaust?

No. The line is built from separate sections; usually only the centre or tail silencer needs work. Replacing per section saves significantly.

Aftermarket or OEM — what's the difference?

OEM matches the factory part. Aftermarket varies: thin-gauge versions last 2 – 3 years, stainless-steel variants can run 15+ years. For a car you'll keep 5+ years, stainless is cheaper long-term.

Can I buy a used exhaust?

Yes, provided no rust-through, cracks or dents. Inspect the flange faces and seams — a Dutch scrapyard typically posts photos with the listing.

Does a leaking exhaust trigger an engine warning light?

Indirectly yes. A leak before the lambda sensor lets in false air, the sensor reads lean, and the engine management over-fuels. Result: P0171 / P0420 codes and higher consumption.

MOT and exhaust — when does it fail?

On visible leakage, rusted-through sections, or loose hangers. Noise must stay within legal limits and emissions within spec. A surface rust patch without a hole isn't a fail.
