Turbocharger: replacement, price, symptoms

The turbocharger forces extra air into the engine — smaller displacement, more power, less fuel. But it spins to 200,000 rpm and runs glowing-hot. Poor oil or shutting down hot drastically shortens its life. This page covers symptoms, price, and why a reconditioned Dutch-sourced unit is often the smart choice.

What does the turbo do?

Exhaust gas spins a turbine wheel which, via a shared shaft, drives a compressor wheel on the intake side. Result: more pressurised air into the cylinder, more fuel, more power. Lubrication comes from the engine oil — contaminated or low-viscosity oil destroys the bearings.

Symptoms of a failing turbo

  • Blue or grey smoke under acceleration (oil burning in the turbo).
  • A persistent whistle or siren under load.
  • Lazy pull, especially in higher gears.
  • Oil on the intake pipe or intercooler.
  • Fault code P0299 (low boost) or P00BD (turbo underspeed).

When to replace

No fixed interval — a well-cared-for turbo reaches 250,000 km, a neglected one is gone at 100,000. Common culprit: long oil-change intervals or wrong oil grade. Reconditioning (new bearings + balance) is often a cheaper alternative.

Typical interval: 150,000250,000 km

What does a new turbo cost?

New: € 700 – € 2,500. Reconditioned or used from Dutch dismantlers: € 200 – € 750, often with 6 – 12 months warranty. Workshop labour: 3 – 6 hours.

DIY?

Difficulty: Hard

Mechanical work for an experienced home mechanic. Critical: prime the oil feed cleanly — a dry-installed turbo dies in seconds.

  • Full socket set with extensions
  • Torque wrench
  • New oil-feed gaskets
  • Fresh engine oil for break-in

Frequently asked questions

How long does a turbo last?

With good maintenance 150,000 – 250,000 km.

Can I buy a used turbo?

Yes, provided it is reconditioned with warranty.

What causes turbo wear?

In order: dirty oil, extended oil change intervals, cold-throttle-mashing, hot shutdown without cool-down.

Can I drive briefly with a failing turbo?

Briefly — limp mode plus incomplete combustion accelerates DPF clogging.

Total workshop cost?

€ 600 – € 2,500 including the part.
