EGR valve: cleaning or replacement
The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gas to the intake to lower combustion temperatures — less NOx, lower emissions. Clever — and it works. But urban driving silts the valve with soot, requiring cleaning or replacement. This page covers symptoms, options and cost.

What does the EGR valve do?
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve opens and closes per the ECU command — typically under part-load. It returns exhaust gas to the intake manifold; soot mixes with incoming air and settles on the valve seat. At full load it should be closed; sticking gives lost power.
Symptoms
- Fault code P0401, P0402, or P0404.
- Persistent check-engine light + limp mode.
- Higher fuel consumption and black smoke.
- Rough idle, especially when cold.
- Exhaust gas smell in the cabin at idle.
When to replace or clean
No fixed interval. City driving and short trips accelerate clogging. Cleaning: € 100 – € 200. Replacement: € 300 – € 900.
