Wheel bearing replacement: price and symptoms
The wheel bearing keeps the wheel turning without resistance. Worn bearings produce a low hum that grows with speed and shifts when cornering. This page covers symptoms, price, and how to find a fitting bearing.

What does the wheel bearing do?
Two ball or roller bearings let the wheel spin around the spindle. Modern bearings are sealed-for-life and often integrate an ABS-sensor ring. Wear sits in the race surfaces.
Symptoms
- Hum or whine growing with speed.
- Sound shifts when steering left/right (left bearing in right curve).
- Detectable play shaking the wheel firmly (3-9 o'clock).
- ABS warning light (integrated sensor).
- Irregular tyre wear.
When to replace
Indicative 100,000 – 200,000 km. MOT criterion: detectable play. Hard driving through standing water and deep potholes accelerate wear.
Typical interval: 100,000–200,000 km
What does it cost?
New: € 40 – € 160 per bearing. Used: € 15 – € 60. Workshop labour: 1 – 2 hours per side.
| Condition | From | To |

DIY?
Difficulty: Medium
Depends on whether the bearing is pressed or supplied as a unit. Pressed bearings need a hydraulic press; unit bearings are DIY-friendly.
- Jack + axle stands
- Bearing puller (specialised)
- Hydraulic press or workshop access
Frequently asked questions
Which wheel?
In a left curve, load shifts to the right bearing — if the sound fades, the LEFT bearing is bad. And vice versa.
One side or both?
One side — only replace both if both have symptoms.
Can I buy a used bearing?
Yes, provided smooth rotation and no audible roughness.
Workshop cost?
€ 150 – € 400 per side including the part.
What accelerates wear?
Standing water, heavy loads, or upstream defects like a worn drive shaft.
