Leaking water pump: symptoms and replacement cost

The water pump is small, cheap, and critical — and most failures announce themselves as a whine or a coolant puddle. This page covers how to recognise a leaking pump, what a new one costs in the Netherlands, and why the workshop usually replaces it alongside the timing belt.

What does the water pump do?

The pump circulates coolant through the engine block and the radiator, preventing overheat. On most engines it is driven by the timing belt or chain; on a minority by a separate poly-V belt. Wear sits mostly in the seal (leak) or the bearing (noise).

Signs of a leaking pump

  • Coolant puddles under the engine, often near the timing cover.
  • A whining or screeching noise from the engine bay at higher revs.
  • Coolant level dropping without visible leak elsewhere.
  • Coolant temperature rising higher than before.
  • A sweet-smelling coolant odour in the engine bay after a drive.

When to replace

Reactive, not preventive — except in one case: when the timing belt is being replaced on an engine where the pump is driven by that same belt, replace the pump too. The labour is identical; the cost of testing the old pump exceeds the cost of replacing it.

Typical interval: 100,000160,000 km

What does a new pump cost?

New: € 60 – € 220. Used or refurbished: € 25 – € 80. Workshop labour as a stand-alone job: 1 – 3 hours. As part of a timing belt service: usually negligible above the main job.

DIY?

Difficulty: Medium

On a poly-V driven pump this is half-day work. On a timing-driven pump you're essentially doing a timing belt job, which raises difficulty. Bleeding the cooling system is critical — an air pocket in the circuit overheats the engine in ten minutes.

  • Socket set
  • Coolant catch pan
  • Fresh coolant + the bleed procedure from the workshop manual
  • Engine-specific timing lock tools (if pump is timing-belt driven)

Frequently asked questions

How long does a water pump last?

Indicative 100,000 – 160,000 km. Often tied to the timing belt interval because access overlaps.

Can I buy a used water pump?

Yes — but check kilometre history. A 60,000 km pump from a written-off car is a fine option; a 200,000 km unit is a gamble.

Workshop cost for the full job?

Stand-alone (poly-V): € 200 – € 500. Bundled with a timing belt service: often only € 50 – € 100 above the main job.

Which coolant should I use?

The owner's manual specifies a type (e.g. G11, G12, G12+, G13). Mixing types can form gel. Flush the system if changing type.

Can I keep driving with a leaking pump?

Briefly, to the workshop — with the heater at full to help cooling. Overheat in ten minutes is realistic.
