Steering rack replacement: price and symptoms

The steering rack — almost always an electric power-assist unit (EPS) on modern cars, a hydraulic system with a pump on older ones — turns your steering wheel input into wheel angle. A fault usually announces itself with heavy steering, a vibration or an unexplained puddle. This page explains how to tell wear from leakage, what a steering rack costs in the Dutch market, and why a workshop must always do a four-wheel alignment after the swap.

What does the steering rack do?

The rack (sometimes called the steering box) converts your steering input into lateral movement of the tie rods, which in turn steer the front wheels through the ball joints and control arms. A hydraulic system uses an engine-driven pump and pressurised fluid; an EPS system uses an electric motor with a torque sensor. Wear sits mainly on the running surfaces, seals (hydraulic — leaks) or the motor and sensor (EPS).

Symptoms of a faulty steering rack

  • Heavy steering, especially at standstill or low speed (EPS motor failure or empty hydraulic system).
  • A red puddle of thin oil (ATF) under the engine bay — usually hydraulic.
  • A whining or pulsing noise when steering (hydraulic pump running dry).
  • Play in the steering wheel: more than 1–2 cm of free movement before the wheels respond.
  • A “power steering” warning light or an EPS fault code.
  • Vibrations through the wheel when driving straight (often combined with wear elsewhere in the suspension).

When to replace?

There is no fixed interval. An EPS rack often passes 200,000 km without complaint; a hydraulic one tends to start leaking around the seals or hoses sooner. Replace when symptoms persist or the workshop diagnoses a leak or fault code. Refurbished and rebuilt racks are common — and for EPS often cheaper than a brand-new unit. Crucial: every replacement requires a four-wheel alignment afterwards, otherwise the car pulls and the tyres wear unevenly.

What does a steering rack cost?

The price spread is wide because “steering rack” covers several different parts. Indications: a new EPS rack runs roughly € 600 – € 1500 depending on make and model, a rebuilt one € 250 – € 700. A hydraulic rack: new € 350 – € 900, rebuilt € 150 – € 450. A used unit from a Dutch dismantler starts around € 80 for older models. Add € 200 – € 600 in labour for the workshop, plus € 80 – € 150 for the mandatory alignment.

DIY?

Difficulty:

Honest advice: this is workshop work. The rack sits deep in the suspension, often behind the subframe or exhaust. The tie rods have to come back at exactly the same length to preserve the toe — and even if you nail that, the car still needs the alignment rig afterwards. On EPS systems there is also a software side: some brands require recalibration of the steering angle sensor via a diagnostic tool. For most owners: source the rack yourself, have an independent garage install it, and book the alignment for straight afterwards.

  • A lift or proper axle stands — not just a jack
  • Torque wrench with a wide range for the tie-rod fasteners
  • Ball-joint puller for the steering knuckle
  • Hydraulic: bleed hose + fresh power-steering fluid
  • Afterwards: four-wheel alignment at a workshop with an alignment rig

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need an alignment afterwards?

Yes. The tie rods come loose during the swap and never return to exactly the same position. Without alignment the car pulls and the front tyres wear unevenly within a few thousand kilometres. Budget € 80 – € 150 for a four-wheel alignment.

What is the difference between an EPS and a hydraulic rack?

EPS (electric power steering) uses an electric motor on the steering column or the rack itself. Hydraulic uses an engine-driven pump with pressurised fluid. EPS doesn’t leak and is more efficient; hydraulic is mechanically simpler but vulnerable to leaks and pump wear.

Can I buy a used steering rack?

Yes, provided it comes from a car with known mileage and looks dry. Many Dutch dismantlers ship racks with 3 – 12 months of warranty. Check the part number — racks are car-specific and sometimes trim-specific (sport vs standard).

Is a rebuilt rack as reliable as new?

From a reputable rebuilder, yes. A rebuild means the seals, bearings, brushes (EPS) and where needed the toothed bar are renewed. Ask for the warranty in writing and keep the part/serial number.

What does the full job cost at a workshop?

Total € 600 – € 2200 including part, labour and alignment, depending on make, model and whether you choose new, rebuilt or used.
