Bad starter motor: telling it apart from a flat battery
A car that refuses to start is almost always either the battery or the starter motor — and the difference is audible. This page covers how to tell the two apart, what a new starter costs in the Netherlands, and why a refurbished unit from a Dutch dismantler is often the smartest choice.

What does the starter motor do?
The starter is an electric motor that spins the crankshaft when you turn the key or press the start button. A built-in solenoid pushes a small gear (the Bendix) into the flywheel ring gear and closes the main contact. Wear sits in the brushes, the solenoid, or the Bendix itself.
Signs of a bad starter
- A single click when you turn the key, then silence (solenoid).
- Fast-clicking without the engine turning (often a weak battery or poor connection).
- The starter spins without engaging the engine (Bendix slipping).
- A round, grinding noise where the engine starts but the starter keeps spinning.
- Nothing at all — dashboard lights up, but no sound at the key.
When to replace
No fixed interval. A starter often lives 150,000 – 250,000 km then fails without warning. Refurbishment is possible: brushes and solenoid are sold separately. Refurbished units from Dutch dismantlers often come with warranty and are significantly cheaper than new.
What does a new starter cost?
New: € 110 – € 420. Refurbished or used: € 45 – € 170. Workshop labour: 1 – 3 hours depending on accessibility (often tucked behind the intake or under the car).
| Condition | From | To |

DIY?
Difficulty: Medium
The job itself is simple: two bolts, two electrical connections. The work is in the access. Always disconnect the battery negative first.
- Socket set with extension
- A poly-V belt tool (rarely needed)
- Work in a pit or on a lift — most starters live under the car
Frequently asked questions
Battery or starter — how to tell?
Slow but turning crank: usually battery. A single click then silence: usually the starter solenoid. Nothing at all: often a fuse or a poor ground.
Can I buy a used starter?
Yes. Dutch dismantlers regularly supply refurbished units with 3 – 12 months warranty.
What is a Bendix?
The small drive gear on the starter that engages the flywheel ring. Wear here produces the characteristic grinding/no-crank pattern.
What does workshop replacement cost?
Budget € 180 – € 600 including the part — depending on access and whether you choose refurbished or new.
Can I bump-start without a working starter?
On a manual transmission: yes, in second gear. On an automatic: no — do not attempt.
