Radiator replacement: price and symptoms
The radiator is the heat exchanger that returns engine coolant to the system. Coolant puddles or a rising temperature gauge are the classic tells. This page covers symptoms, price, and how to find a fitting radiator.

What does the radiator do?
A finned aluminium core — cool air flows past, absorbing heat. The water pump pushes coolant; the thermostat gates radiator flow.
Symptoms
- Coolant puddles under the engine.
- Pressure loss in the expansion tank (no resistance under the cap).
- Rising temperature gauge, especially in traffic or under load.
- White smoke or sweet smell from the engine bay.
- Visual: green or pink stains on the radiator face.
When to replace
No fixed interval — usually after 150,000+ km or stone-strike damage. Repair of cracked fins is rarely cost-effective.
What does it cost?
New: € 90 – € 380. Used from Dutch dismantlers: € 35 – € 130. Workshop labour: 1 – 3 hours (bumper sometimes needs to come off).
