Clutch replacement: symptoms, cost and lifespan
A clutch wears with use, not age. Heavy stop-start traffic and slipping the clutch on hills accelerate it. A well-driven manual easily reaches 200,000 km. This page covers how to recognise a slipping or noisy clutch, what a complete kit costs, and when the flywheel goes too.

What does the clutch do?
The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox — and disconnects them when you press the pedal. A friction plate is clamped against the flywheel by the pressure plate; pressing the pedal pulls the plate away via the release bearing. Wear lives mostly on the friction disc and the release bearing. Clutch jobs are often combined with a timing belt service when the gearbox is out anyway.
Signs of a worn clutch
- The engine revs without the car accelerating in proportion (slip in 4th or 5th gear on a hill is the clearest tell).
- A noticeably higher or lower bite point than before.
- A burning-rubber smell under hard acceleration — often a disc partly delaminated.
- A humming or rumbling sound when the clutch is pressed (release bearing).
- Shuddering from a standstill (worn dual-mass flywheel).
When to replace
Indicative 120,000 – 200,000 km, but driving style matters most. A driver who rides the clutch on hills will burn one out in 80,000 km. A driver who does nothing wrong gets 250,000 km. Always replace as a kit: disc, pressure plate, release bearing. The dual-mass flywheel often goes too — measure with the spec gauge before deciding.
Typical interval: 120,000–200,000 km
What does a complete kit cost?
A complete kit (disc + pressure plate + release bearing) runs € 180 – € 650 depending on brand and engine. A dual-mass flywheel adds € 250 – € 700. Workshop labour: 5 – 10 hours, because the gearbox has to come out. Used friction discs are a bad idea; used flywheels are sometimes acceptable if wear is measured.

DIY?
Difficulty: Hard
Clutch work is possible but heavy. The gearbox comes out, the disc must be perfectly centred, and a few millimetres off and the box will not slide back. For most owners: order the kit yourself, send it with the car to an independent garage, pay labour only.
- Gearbox support (hoist or engine crane)
- Clutch alignment tool
- Wide-range torque wrench
- Time: a full day for an experienced home mechanic
Frequently asked questions
How do I confirm my clutch is slipping?
Test on a flat road in 5th gear at 60 km/h. Apply full throttle gradually. Does engine speed climb faster than road speed? That's slip.
Does the dual-mass flywheel always go too?
On modern diesels: usually yes. On petrol engines and smaller motors: not always. Diagnose by measuring DMF play with the spec gauge.
What does a workshop charge for the full job?
Budget € 800 – € 1,800 including the kit, depending on engine and model. Add € 400 – € 800 for a DMF.
Can I buy a used clutch disc?
Not recommended. Friction material is a wear part; used sets are partly consumed. A used DMF can be acceptable, but only if measured.
How long does a new clutch last?
Normal use: 150,000 – 250,000 km. Heavy urban or mountain driving cuts that.
