What does the cooling fan do?

The cooling fan pulls air through the radiator when ram air is no longer enough — typically at standstill, in traffic, or under high load. Virtually all modern cars have an electric cooling fan controlled by a temperature switch or by the engine management. Older cars sometimes still have a mechanical fan with a viscous clutch driven directly by the auxiliary belt. Wear sits in the electric motor (brushes), the relay or the control circuit, or — for viscous clutches — in the clutch itself.

Signs of a failing cooling fan

  • Temperature gauge climbs in traffic or at standstill; drops while moving.
  • AC cools poorly at idle (the fan should kick in too).
  • No audible fan kick-in after a drive (listen with the bonnet up after warm-up).
  • Fault code in the cooling fan circuit (P0480 / P0481 / P0482).
  • Humming or rattling in the engine bay (bearing failure).
  • Blown fuse on the fan circuit.

When to replace

No fixed interval — cooling fans fail reactively. Diagnose first: is it the motor (failed fan), the control side (relay, temperature switch, ECU signal), or the thermostat not opening? Quick test: bridge the temperature switch or trigger the fan manually — if it spins, the motor is good and the problem is upstream. If it doesn't, the motor or wiring is broken.

What does a new cooling fan cost?

New, complete with shroud and motor: € 60 – € 300 depending on brand and rating. Motor only (no shroud): € 30 – € 120. Used from a Dutch scrapyard: € 25 – € 110, usually as a complete unit. Workshop labour: 1 – 3 hours, often the front grille or bumper has to come partly off to reach the shroud.

Mechanically not bad: a few bolts, unplug, lift out. The real work is two-fold: reaching the motor (often the bumper or grille must come partly off), and getting the diagnosis right before you swap parts. Without a multimeter you're guessing: measure voltage at the plug with the engine warm and AC on. 12 V at the plug but no rotation? Motor failed. No voltage? Then it's the relay, fuse, temperature switch or wiring.

How do I know it's the fan and not the thermostat?

Both cause overheating, but at different times. Stuck thermostat: engine runs hot during normal driving. Failed fan: hot only at standstill or in traffic; the moment you move, ram air through the radiator drops the temperature. That's the strongest signal.

Is my car electric or mechanical?

Virtually all cars from around 2000 onward have an electric fan (own motor, own control). Older RWD V6/V8 models often still use a mechanical fan with a viscous clutch on the water pump. Visually: electric = separate from the engine, with a connector. Mechanical = bolted to the water pump, no connector.

Can I buy a used cooling fan?

Yes. A complete unit from a Dutch scrapyard is a common choice and often comes with a short warranty. Check the motor spins freely and engages on voltage — ask the seller to test before shipping.
