Throttle body: replacement or cleaning, price and symptoms

The throttle body — on modern cars an electronically controlled throttle housing — meters how much air the engine draws in and, with the injectors, how fast it revs. Fouling, a worn position sensor or a failed stepper motor reveal themselves as a rough idle, the check-engine light and hesitant throttle response. This page explains the choice between cleaning and replacing, what each costs, and why you usually need a scan-tool “adaptation” after the job.

What does the throttle body do?

The throttle body is a round flap in the intake tract that opens and closes based on accelerator input (drive-by-wire). A position sensor reports the angle back to the ECU, which adjusts injection accordingly. Fouling — a film of carbon coming from the EGR return, oil mist from the crankcase ventilation — makes the flap sluggish or rest at the wrong zero point. On EGR-driven engines (see also EGR valve) the throttle body fouls faster.

Symptoms of a dirty or faulty throttle body

  • Unstable idle — revs hunting between 600 and 1100 rpm.
  • Check-engine light on, often with a P0120–P0124 (position sensor) or P2100–P2110 fault code.
  • Hesitant or sluggish throttle response on take-off.
  • A stumble at very low speed (parking, pulling away on an incline).
  • Sometimes a “limp home” mode capping revs at around 2000 rpm.
  • Higher fuel consumption and degraded emissions.

Clean or replace?

First step is almost always to clean. Disconnect the unit, clean with throttle-body cleaner and a soft cloth (never a metal brush), refit and have the adaptation done — that fixes many complaints. If the issue returns within a few weeks, or the wear sits in the position sensor or stepper motor, replacement is unavoidable. Indicative life: 100,000 – 180,000 km for the complete unit, with cleaning intervals far shorter (40,000 – 80,000 km on engines prone to fouling).

What does a new throttle body cost?

A new throttle body runs € 80 – € 400 depending on make and engine. A used part from a Dutch dismantler is typically € 25 – € 150 and often comes with a short warranty. Workshop labour: 0.5 – 1.5 hours plus € 30 – € 60 for the diagnostic-tool adaptation. Cleaning only: about an hour of labour, no parts cost — ask for it first if the engine still runs reasonably.

DIY?

Difficulty:

Mechanically this is a medium job — three or four bolts and two connectors. What pushes it into expert territory is what comes next: most cars require an adaptation procedure in which the ECU relearns the position sensor’s zero point. Without that step the engine idles erratically or refuses to settle. Some brands let you do this with a better scan tool (Autel, Launch, VAG-COM); others require dealer-level equipment. For most owners: source the part, let an independent garage fit it and perform the adaptation.

  • Socket set (often torx or hex for the throttle-body bolts)
  • Throttle-body cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth (no metal brush)
  • A new intake gasket if applicable
  • An OBD-II scan tool that supports “throttle adaptation” or “idle relearn” — not every budget reader can do this

Frequently asked questions

Clean or replace right away?

Always start with cleaning — that fixes fouled throttle bodies. If the complaint returns within a few thousand kilometres, or the workshop measures a deviation on the position sensor, replacement is the next step.

What is an adaptation and why is it needed?

The ECU learns the exact open and closed angles of the throttle and stores them. After removal, cleaning or replacement, that reference is off — the adaptation resets it. Many cars run rough until the procedure completes.

Can I buy a used throttle body?

Yes, provided it’s exactly the same part number. A used unit with known mileage from a Dutch dismantler is a solid budget option. It will still need an adaptation.

Which fault codes point to the throttle body?

P0120–P0124 (position sensor), P2100–P2110 (control signal or motor drive) and P0638 (control deviation). Supporting evidence: measured air mass deviates from the requested load.

What does the full job cost at a workshop?

Cleaning only: € 50 – € 120. Replacement including adaptation: € 200 – € 600 depending on whether you choose new, used or refurbished.
