Ball joint replacement: price and symptoms
The ball joint sits between the control arm and the wheel hub and lets the wheel steer. Play on it is an instant MOT failure. This page covers symptoms, price, and whether to swap just the joint or the whole arm.

What does the ball joint do?
The ball joint is a spherical bearing that hangs the wheel hub from the control arm — it carries no torque, it is a guide. A grease boot keeps the joint lubricated; if that tears, grease escapes and the joint runs dry.
Symptoms
- Knocking over bumps.
- Detectable play when shaking the wheel firmly (12-6 o'clock).
- Grinding under steering at low speed.
- Visual: split grease boot.
- Irregular tyre wear (late stage).
When to replace
Indicative 100,000 – 180,000 km. MOT criterion: any measurable play beyond spec. Replace per side.
Typical interval: 100,000–180,000 km
What does it cost?
New: € 30 – € 120 per joint. Often more practical: a complete control arm (€ 70 – € 280) with the joint already pressed in. Workshop labour: 0.5 – 1 hour.
| Condition | From | To |
