Fuel pump replacement: price and symptoms
The fuel pump usually sits inside the tank and pumps petrol or diesel to the injection system. Hot-start issues, stalling, or sluggish acceleration often point to it. This page covers diagnostics, price, and how to find a fitting pump from Dutch inventory.

What does the fuel pump do?
Petrol injection runs at 3 – 5 bar low-pressure; common-rail diesel uses a high-pressure pump at up to 1,800 bar. The in-tank pump is electric and has a built-in pre-filter that eventually clogs.
Symptoms
- Hot-start trouble.
- Sudden stall while driving, then restart fine after minutes.
- Erratic power under load.
- Audible hum or silence from the tank.
- Low fuel pressure fault code (P0087 / P0089).
When to replace
No fixed interval — typical 150,000 – 250,000 km. Always-low fuel and contaminated fuel accelerate wear.
Typical interval: 150,000–250,000 km
What does it cost?
New: € 150 – € 700. Used: € 40 – € 180. Workshop labour: 1 – 4 hours (tank often needs partial draining).

DIY?
Difficulty: Medium
For petrol in-tank pumps, half-day work. Drain fuel, unscrew tank flange, swap. Ventilate well — fuel vapours are flammable.
- Tank-flange tool
- Container for drained fuel
- New O-ring for the tank flange
Frequently asked questions
How do I confirm it is the pump?
Measure fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge. Below spec? Pump or filter.
Try the fuel filter first?
Yes — a new fuel filter (€ 15 – € 40) often resolves pump-like symptoms.
Can I buy a used pump?
Yes, ideally from a reputable Dutch dismantler with warranty.
Workshop cost?
€ 300 – € 1,200 including the part.
How do I extend pump life?
Never let the tank drop below a quarter — the pump is fuel-cooled.
