Replacing the fuel filter: interval, price and symptoms

The fuel filter protects the most expensive part of the fuel system — the injectors — from dirt, water and rust. On petrol it's often built into the tank unit and stays put for a long time; on diesel it's almost always in-line with its own interval. This page explains the difference, the interval, the price and what replacement costs.

What does the fuel filter do?

The fuel filter filters the fuel between the tank and the injectors. On petrol it mainly catches dust and rust particles from the tank; on diesel it also filters out water and biofilm. Common-rail diesel systems run at 1,500 – 2,500 bar — one speck of dirt is the difference between working and ruined. That's why diesels always have a dedicated replaceable in-line filter, often with a water separator and a drain plug. On modern petrol cars the filter usually sits in the tank module and is labelled a 'lifetime' component — which in practice means 'until it fails'.

Symptoms of a clogged fuel filter

  • Stuttering engine or power loss under load, especially at full throttle or uphill.
  • Poor starting, long cranking before the engine catches — often clearer on diesel.
  • Irregular idle or stalling at standstill.
  • Audibly harder-working fuel pump (a high-pitched hum from the tank area).
  • On diesel: check-engine light and/or a 'water in fuel filter' warning (some models).
  • Higher fuel consumption from incomplete combustion.

When to replace

For an in-line diesel filter the interval is indicatively 30,000 – 60,000 km or once every two years, whichever comes first. Sooner if you use lower-grade diesel or do short trips (which condense water in the tank). On petrol cars with a tank-module filter the manufacturer often specifies 'lifetime', which in practice means indicatively 100,000 – 200,000 km — but with age or a fouled tank it can be needed sooner. The exact interval is in the owner's manual and service history.

Typical interval: 30,00060,000 km

What does a fuel filter cost?

An in-line diesel filter typically runs € 25 – € 80 depending on brand and whether it includes a water separator and sensor. A tank-module filter (petrol, in tank) is more expensive — € 50 – € 200 — because it's often replaced together with the fuel pump. OEM parts run 20 – 50% above aftermarket. Workshop labour varies sharply: an in-line diesel filter replacement in an independent garage costs indicatively € 40 – € 90 in labour; removing a tank module takes 1 – 3 hours because the tank often has to be dropped or lifted.

DIY or workshop?

Difficulty: Medium

Replacing an in-line diesel filter is a job for a competent DIYer: locate the filter (often on the bulkhead or in the wheel arch), drain the water, undo the hoses or quick-connects, and fit the new filter with the arrow in the flow direction. Pre-fill the new filter with clean diesel as much as possible to speed up bleeding, and prime the system before starting — otherwise an empty common-rail draws air through the high-pressure pump, and that's not a cheap replacement. Tank-module filters (petrol) are workshop work: don't DIY in an enclosed space, fuel vapours are flammable and the tank seal must go back leak-tight.

  • Socket and ring spanner set
  • Hose clamp pliers or quick-connect release tool
  • Drain pan for fuel and a rag
  • Work gloves and eye protection
  • Optional: hand priming pump (for diesels without electric pre-injection)

Frequently asked questions

How often does the fuel filter need replacing?

On in-line diesel filters, indicatively every 30,000 – 60,000 km or once every two years. On petrol cars with a tank-module filter it's often listed as 'lifetime' (indicatively 100,000 – 200,000 km) — but replace earlier if symptoms appear or the tank is fouled.

What's the difference between a diesel and petrol fuel filter?

A diesel filter filters finer and almost always has a water separator; common-rail runs at high pressure and is sensitive to the smallest particle. Petrol filters are usually simpler and often sit in the tank module. Never fit a filter that's not designed for your fuel.

What does fuel filter replacement cost?

Diesel filter part € 25 – € 80, labour € 40 – € 90. Petrol tank-module filter € 50 – € 200 part plus 1 – 3 hours labour. OEM parts run 20 – 50% above aftermarket.

Can I replace a diesel filter myself?

On older diesels with a mechanical lift pump, yes; on modern common-rail diesels, pre-filling and bleeding are critical — otherwise the high-pressure pump draws air and gets damaged. When in doubt: workshop.

How do I know which fuel filter fits my car?

The old filter carries a part number, and on diesels the engine code is decisive; search by licence plate or OEM number on onderdelen.autos and only fitting filters are shown.
