A/C refrigerant refill: price, interval and what the workshop does

An A/C that no longer blows properly cold usually has too little refrigerant. Topping up sounds simple but it's workshop work: the system runs under pressure, refrigerants fall under EU F-gas regulations, and only certified technicians may handle them. This page explains why you don't tackle it yourself, what an A/C service costs in the Netherlands, and how often to have it done.

How does A/C work?

The air-conditioning system is a sealed refrigerant circuit: a compressor (driven by a poly-V belt or electric on hybrids) pressurises the refrigerant, a condenser at the front of the car releases heat to outside air, and an evaporator behind the dashboard pulls heat out of cabin air. The refrigerant — usually R134a or the newer R1234yf — cycles between liquid and gas. The system is sealed: refrigerant doesn't disappear from use, only from leakage or slow diffusion through hoses.

Signs of an A/C low on refrigerant

  • The A/C blows air but no longer cools, or barely cools.
  • Outflow temperature is less than 8 °C below outside air.
  • The compressor cycles on and off more often (short-cycling on pressure protection).
  • A sweet, ethereal smell from the vents (slight refrigerant leak).
  • Oily traces around A/C line fittings (UV detection fluid reveals this most clearly).

When to service or refill

Indicative: once every 2 to 3 years — often during the summer-prep service. A healthy system loses around 10 – 15 % of refrigerant per year through normal diffusion. When pressure drops too far, the compressor shuts off to prevent damage. A proper A/C service is more than just topping up: the system is first evacuated, vacuum-pulled to remove moisture, then refilled to manufacturer specification. A combined UV-fluid or nitrogen leak test often goes alongside.

What does A/C service cost?

Indicative for a complete A/C service (evacuate, vacuum, recharge with fresh refrigerant, basic check): € 60 – € 100 for R134a systems, € 90 – € 150 for R1234yf systems (the newer refrigerant is more expensive and is on cars from model year 2017). An extended leak test with UV fluid and any repair work comes on top. Workshop cost is mostly labour; the equipment and refrigerant itself sit in there — not margin.

DIY refill?

Difficulty:

Don't. Refrigerants fall under the EU F-gas regulation and can only be handled by technicians with the relevant certificate (in the Netherlands: STEK). The aerosol cans sometimes sold online ("DIY A/C refill") are a bad idea: they often contain a wrong mix, don't pull a vacuum to remove moisture, and can overfill the system so the compressor takes damage. Penalties for unlicensed refrigerant handling are significant. What you can do yourself: replace the cabin air filter — a common cause of an A/C that feels weak or musty.

  • A/C service station (evacuate, vacuum, fill) — not available at home
  • F-gas certificate to handle refrigerant — legally required
  • Leak detection means (UV fluid or electronic sniffer)

Frequently asked questions

How often should A/C be serviced?

Indicative: once every 2 to 3 years. A healthy system loses around 10 – 15 % of refrigerant per year through normal diffusion.

Why can't I just refill it myself?

Refrigerant falls under the EU F-gas regulation. Handling requires a certificate. Correct refilling also requires vacuum-pulling (moisture removal) and precise weighing — equipment not available at home.

R134a or R1234yf — which refrigerant is in my car?

A sticker in the engine bay (usually on top of the condenser or near the bonnet hinge) lists the type and the correct grams. Cars up to roughly 2017: R134a. After that: R1234yf.

My A/C blows but doesn't cool — should I refill right away?

Not right away. First a leak test: refrigerant doesn't disappear on its own. Filling on top of a leak doesn't solve the problem and is a waste of refrigerant.

What does A/C repair cost when there's a leak?

Depends on where the leak is. A line fitting with a new O-ring: € 80 – € 150 including refill. A new condenser (often after a stone strike): € 250 – € 500. A compressor: € 600 – € 1500. Diagnose first.
