Drive shaft (CV) replacement: price and symptoms
The drive shaft carries power from the gearbox to the wheel. A clicking CV joint on full-lock turns or grease on the wheel arch are the classic signs. This page covers diagnostics, price, and how to source a shaft from Dutch sellers.

What does the drive shaft do?
Each end of the drive shaft has a CV (constant velocity) joint that transmits torque while the wheel steers and articulates. A rubber boot keeps grease in and dirt out; once it tears, wear accelerates fast.
Symptoms
- Clicking or ticking on full-lock turns at low speed.
- Vibration under acceleration in a straight line.
- Grease around the CV boot or on the wheel.
- Hum while driving (internal CV bearing dry).
- Visual: torn CV boot.
When to replace
Indicative 150,000 – 250,000 km. A torn boot can in theory be replaced alone, but contamination spoils the joint quickly. Often a full shaft is cheaper long-term.
Typical interval: 150,000–250,000 km

Frequently asked questions
Clicking on turns — always the drive shaft?
Almost always. Rare alternatives: anti-roll-bar bush, dry ball joint.
Can I just replace the boot?
Only if the boot just started to crack and no debris reached the joint.
Can I buy a used shaft?
Yes, provided it runs quietly (test on a road test) and the boots are intact.
Workshop cost?
€ 200 – € 700 including the part.
One side or both?
One side is standard — replace both only if both have symptoms.
